Port Blair: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a 'cyclone alert' for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to a developing cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, expected to strengthen starting October 21, according to officials on Monday.

In response to this weather system, local port warnings have been issued, anticipating heavy rainfall until October 23.

"Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is expected at isolated locations in the Nicobar Islands. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (40-50 km/h) and lightning are also anticipated in parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 21, 22, and 23," an official stated.

The forecast indicates that thunderstorms with similar wind conditions will persist in the region on October 24 and 25.

"Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h, is likely over the Andaman Sea from October 22 to 23. Over the next five days, sea conditions are expected to be rough, and fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea along the Andaman Sea and the coast of Andaman and Nicobar until October 24," the official added.

Due to the risk of high waves, boat operators, island residents, and tourists are urged to exercise extreme caution while navigating the waters, and recreational activities should be conducted with care.

Tourists and the general public are advised to avoid entering the sea and to adhere to all safety protocols issued by local authorities.
